KRYSTOLTM CONCRETE WATERPROOFING SYSTEM

Annacis Island Wastewater Plant
British Columbia, Canada

BACKGROUND
In the mid-1990's, the Annacis Island Sewage Treatment Facility upgraded its largest treatment plant from primary treatment to secondary treatment. The upgrade was a significant investment valued at CAN $470 million, requiring new concrete construction and improvements to existing infrastructure. KIM Admixture was specified for waterproofing base slabs and walls in place of membrane and Bentonite waterproofing at the deepest locations on site - three (3) stories below the water table.

SOLUTION
KIM eliminated all shrinkage cracking in base slabs and walls. For the following 2 1/2 years, these areas were observed to be in perfect crack-free condition. Cracks began to appear in the walls near the end of 1996. These diagonal cracks were measured to be in excess of 0.5 mm in width. Water began to enter these cracks under high hydrostatic pressure. With the presence of moisture, Krystol growth immediately began to arrest leakage, permanently stopping the cracks from leaking.
